Rahul Dravid Quits Rajasthan Royals Head Coach Role After IPL 2025
Rahul Dravid has stepped down as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR) after just one season. The franchise announced on Saturday that Dravid was offered a bigger role within the team setup but chose not to take it.
Dravid’s exit comes despite a multi-year contract and follows RR’s disappointing IPL 2025, where they finished ninth with just four wins in 14 matches—their worst performance since 2021. Adding to the drama, RR captain Sanju Samson, who has led the team since 2021, reportedly asked to be released ahead of IPL 2026, fuelling speculation about possible differences within the camp.
Rajasthan Royals’ Statement
RR said in an official statement:
"Head coach Rahul Dravid will conclude his tenure with the franchise ahead of IPL 2026. Rahul has been central to the Royals' journey for many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, instilled strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise.
As part of the franchise structural review, Rahul had been offered a broader position at the franchise, but has chosen not to take this. The Rajasthan Royals, its players, and millions of fans worldwide extend heartfelt thanks to Rahul for his remarkable service to the franchise."
Dravid’s Role in RR
During his single season as head coach, Dravid played a key role in player retention and IPL auction strategy. The Royals retained stars like Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, and Shimron Hetmyer. But injuries to key players and several close losses made IPL 2025 a difficult season.
Reports suggest that Dravid and Samson had different views on team strategy and leadership, which may have contributed to the changes ahead of IPL 2026, although the franchise has not officially commented on any conflict.
Dravid’s Long Association with RR
Dravid has been connected to RR since 2011, as a player, captain (2012–13), and later as team director and mentor. His departure leaves RR and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) without a head coach for IPL 2026. KKR’s Chandrakant Pandit recently resigned after winning the title in 2024, while Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are also restructuring.
Currently, RR’s support staff includes Kumar Sangakkara (Director of Cricket), Vikram Rathour (Batting Coach), and Shane Bond (Bowling Coach). RR has won the IPL only once, in 2008, and their next-best finish was runners-up in 2022.
Coaching Journey and Legacy
Dravid coached RR in 2014–15 before taking on India’s U-19, ‘A’, and senior teams. He extended his India head coach contract in 2023 and won the T20 World Cup, ending on a high. Returning to RR after a decade, Dravid hoped to rebuild the team, but his stint lasted only one season.
Even in a short tenure, Dravid left a strong legacy, shaping young players and building team culture.
What’s Next for RR
With Dravid gone and Samson seeking a new chapter, RR now faces a challenge in finding a new head coach and reorganising leadership ahead of IPL 2026. Fans will watch closely to see how the Royals manage the transition and rebuild.
